Market Update – Sea Freight

Both space and equipment is tight at the moment with fully booked vessels and empty container depots. November which is normally slow month, has proven the opposite and vessels to and from Asia are fully booked. This has caused the rates to rocket and are currently at all time high levels.

The shortage of containers is especially low in Asia where the demand of 40’HC has been extremely high. This is a result of that Q3 2020 has been the strongest export quarter ever from Asia and so far we don’t see any decrease in volumes.

Status in the Nordics

Nordic ports are being hit particularly hard with equipment shortage and space constraints on both import and export as the ocean carriers want their container turn-around speeds to increase so the units go only to European base ports and then directly back to the Chinese market where they can generate high freight income. This has already increased rates drastically for the Nordic market, particularly for imports, but rates are expected to increase further and disruptions will be extensive on both import and export services with vessel omittances, schedule changes and booking blocks/cancellations.

To meet this situation, we kindly ask you to send us your forecasts in order to plan your bookings in good advance. As we see it, this situation will last until Chinese New Year in February.

The expansion continues!

We’re happy to welcome two new members of staff at our Stockholm office as we’re both straightening our sales force and our operational team.

Christoffer Jönsson has joined the field sales team covering Sweden and Scandinavia. He has just returned to Sweden after spending two years in Shanghai where he was part of the Trade Lane team for one of the major international forwarders. Christoffer has before that many years of experience from shipping and his knowledge will be a perfect addition to our sales team.

The operational team welcomes Jonna Skallberg who’ll be handling both your export and import shipments.

Bolloré Logistics beefs up its Nordic presence

Bolloré Logistics, ranking among the world’s top 10 in transport and logistics, has taken a significant leap forward in the Nordics with the acquisition of a majority stake in the Swedish company Global Freight Solutions AB and its Finnish affiliate. This now extends the present Bolloré Logistics network to 600 offices in 109 countries with 25,000 employees. This acquisition reinforces the company’s presence in Europe, especially in the Nordic markets. It was a strategic target to complement the regional network having previously established a structure in Norway which was subsequently joined by a similar investment in Denmark.

Established in 2006, G-Solutions is headquartered in the maritime hub of Gothenburg, with additional offices in Stockholm and Helsinki, offering a comprehensive portfolio of services. As an export driven economy Sweden is an industrial powerhouse. Alongside Finland, the area matches perfectly many of Bolloré Logistics’ strategic industry verticals, such as mining, power, automotive, aeronautics and defence, telecom, hi tech, healthcare and retail.

Commenting on the news, Henri Le Gouis, CEO Europe of Bolloré Logistics, said: “I am delighted to strengthen our footprint in the region, this will allow greater depth and consistency to our commercial proximity with clients. As the deal neared completion, we have already been working together under a partnership arrangement. This already delivered many commercial opportunities and we are delighted now to formalise our shared future, such as coupling up with the company’s industrial projects division, and to offer Swedish exporters new logistics solutions boosting their performances into the African, Middle East and Asian markets. I know our clients and network colleagues will welcome this development.”

Responding on behalf of G Solutions, Johan Moerth, Managing Director, added: “I am extremely positive about this development. We have grown rapidly and acquired a reputation for quality of service and accessibility to clients. I believe these values underpin our success and are perfectly matched to Bolloré Logistics’ culture. Now with access to the company’s systems, expertise and strategic carrier alliances I believe we will contribute very strongly to its growth in the region. In the challenging times of Covid-19 we are already extending Bolloré Logistics charter options and bespoke industry solutions across the full range of clients in our region. Whether it be China, the Americas or our unparalleled reach in Africa, we are seeing immediate synergies between our local client relationships and the power and scope of solutions that only a major player can provide.

Strikes Cancelled!

The announced strike in all main Swedish ports planned to commence today, 6th March, has in the very last minute been cancelled.

An agreement has been reached between the Swedish Dockworkers Union and the Ports of Sweden, and the details available so far confirm that both parties agree to cancel all hostile action and return to “business as usual”.

As ocean line carriers and truckers have planned for an all-out strike, some disturbances are still to be expected the coming days, but hopefully this will only have minor consequences and we will try our utmost to minimize the effects of this for our clients.
